How to Tie a Durag Properly (No Lines, Full Compression)
The exact tying method that gives even pressure across the whole head without leaving a mark on your forehead.

A durag only works if it is tied right. Too loose and it slides off overnight. Too tight and you wake up with a line across your forehead. Follow these steps for a clean, secure tie every time.
What you need
A durag with long ties and an outside seam. Your hair should already be brushed and moisturized.
Step-by-step
- Flip it inside out if you want the seam off your hair, which prevents a line down the middle of your waves.
- Place it on your head with the front edge sitting just above your eyebrows, centered.
- Take a tie in each hand and pull them back around your head, above the ears.
- Cross them at the back of your head at the nape, keeping the fabric flat with no twisting.
- Bring the ties forward and cross them again over your forehead, flat against the front panel.
- Take them back and knot them at the nape of your neck. One firm double knot is enough.
- Pull the tail flap down over the knot so it lays flat against your neck.
Getting the tension right
You want firm, even pressure, snug but not painful. If your forehead feels pinched, re-tie with the front edge slightly higher.
Avoid forehead lines
- Keep the ties flat, never rolled into a rope.
- Do not tie directly on your eyebrows.
- Use a silk durag overnight; slick fabric leaves fewer marks.
Styling for going out
For a clean look, tuck the knot under the tail and let the flap hang straight. Velvet durags hold this shape best.
Practice it a few times in the mirror. After a week it takes under 30 seconds.
